The expanse of Western New York's and Southern Ontario's waterfront will be magically transformed into a "boomtown" with the Eighth Annual "Boom Days" celebration, April 15-17, 2010. "Boom Days" is the region's grass roots celebration of the advent of spring, commencing each year with the lifting of the Lake Erie-Niagara River ice boom. "Boom Days" commemorates the Niagara region's bustling waterways of days gone by, glorifies our natural, artistic and cultural wealth, and thanks our strong winter.
Festivities will begin with the ceremonial Ice Boom Ball Drop as mayors and dignitaries from both sides of the border thrust an orange, 7 foot diameter ball over the railing of the Peace Bridge and watch it gently drift the length of the Niagara River. The E.M. Cotter, the world's oldest operating fireboat will be on hand with a full water-jet salute.
Saturday, April 17 starts off with hundreds of hardworking volunteers partnering with Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper to clean up the shoreline at 40 sites throughout the Buffalo Niagara region! Cleanup crews will pick up trash such as clothing, drinking bottles, shopping carts, mattresses, and car parts as well as perform community beautification projects.
And on Saturday night we vent a winter's worth of pent-up energy and party!
In Buffalo we're at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park. Adults and children alike will enjoy live music featuring The Stonebridge Band, a fireworks display by WNY Skylighters, plenty of food and beverages, and a great party up until 10.
Another Saturday evening highlight is the Boom Days Poetry Contest, when contest winners will receive their prizes and have an opportunity to read their work.
And in Niagara Falls we're at the LaSalle Yacht Club, 73 South 68th Street, where there will be live music featuring Ladies First Jazz, created by Jennifer May, a fireworks display, and a full night of pageantry.
